FITCHBURG, Mass. — The city of Fitchburg has its Civil War-era cannons back after a more than $30,000 restoration project.
The Sentinel and Enterprise reports that the two cannons that have been stationed in Monument Park in downtown Fitchburg have been gone seven months.
Steen Cannons, in Ashland, Kentucky, replaced the wood carriages of both cannons with a carriage made out of aluminum that looks like wood.
City officials say that will allow the cannons to remain outside year-round.
The more than $31,000 raised for the project came through grants and donations.
The city expects to hold a ceremony to rededicate the two cannons in early spring.
