Betty L. Sweeney, 91, of Columbus, passed from this life at 7:27 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Four Seasons Health Care Center.
Mrs. Sweeney was born March 14, 1927, in Columbus, the daughter of Pliny H. and Annetta B. Strahl Poffenberger.
On September 26, 1948, she married Dearl E. Sweeney, he survives.
Mrs. Sweeney was a member of the 1948 graduating class at St. Vincent School of Nursing.
A registered nurse, Mrs. Sweeney had served her community at the Bartholomew County Hospital and with Dr. Marvin Davis, and she retired from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation.
She was a faithful member of the First Christian Church where she had been a Bible school teacher.
She enjoyed membership in the Modern Homemakers for many years and she was a 4-H leader for many years.
She had been a longtime volunteer at her church and the Senior Center.
Mrs. Sweeney is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dearl; her daughters, Connie (Bill) Crosby of Greenwood and Becky (Ken) Arbuckle of Fishers; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Huffman of Carmel and Evalena (David) Smith of Marion, a brother, Scott (Joanne) Poffenberger of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Gloria Wayman of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Sweeney was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard Wayman; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Huffman.
The funeral will be held at noon Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Steve Yeaton officiating. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Friends of First Christian Church to assist with church repairs.
