SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A Springfield man died trying to save two of his children during a deadly fire that swept through an apartment building.

Officials say they believe Aden Abdakadr was the father of Ahmed Ahmed, 2, and Fatumo Ahmed, 1, who perished in the fire Sunday morning.

A family friend told The Boston Globe Abdakadr made it out only to turn around when he realized his son and daughter were still inside.

The fire broke out shortly after 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with flames so intense residents jumped out windows before firefighters arrived.

Abdakadr’s wife is hospitalized from injuries sustained while successfully rescuing one of their children.

Four other people have also been taken to the hospital. Over 60 people have been displaced by the fire.

The cause remains under investigation.
