Greetings Columbus —
I am looking on the bright side of this spring snow. It’s pretty.
Here are photos taken this morning of downtown Columbus sent by a loyal reader. She works downtown and shares this sentiment: “Spring 2018 on Washington Street today. Winter won’t let go.”
Another upside to our March 21 snowfall is that Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. students are still on spring break so no delays or school closings for them.
But that is not the case for students at Flat Rock-Hawcreek, Jennings County and Brown County. Classes are canceled because of slick roads. Click here for all the closings.
On the not-so-great aspect of the winter weather is that law enforcement has been responding to multiple slideoffs and accidents.
More than 30 accidents were called in to the Bartholomew County Emergency Operations Center during today’s morning drive time. Story here.
Here’s an example —
I just drove up on this vehicle that slid off the road on US 50 near the Jackson/Jennings County line. This is almost always caused by speed too fast for weather conditions. pic.twitter.com/xyy6kJxoQg

So let’s all hope that winter let’s go — real soon.
Here’s what else you need to know today —
Men in the Life of Kids, and these photos (above) are pure joy!
Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputies Kevin Abner and Nick Martoccia were there. So was Steve LaRue, a Columbus Township firefighter. They showed up at a Columbus daycare to interact with children who may not have fathers in their lives, serving as role models and mentors. Thursday’s Republic.
The railroad overpass project: We have liftoff.
Before one ounce of concrete gets poured, you’ve got to have the land. Area landowners are getting updates on the impact of the $30 million project at State Roads 46 and 11 and if officials will need to purchase their property. All the details here.
Tariffs, trade and Cummins.
Cummins CEO Tom Linebarger addressed the Business Roundtable organization Tuesday and the topic was trade. WIBC had this report about his remarks:
“The biggest market for Cummins outside the U.S. is China. It’s the largest truck market in the world, it’s growing the fastest, so by being present in China, that’s had a lot to do with why we’re able to add jobs in the U.S.,” says Linebarger.
“More than 5,000 of our jobs in the U.S. relate strictly to our overseas operations,” according to Linebarger who says great trade relations with China has led to the company’s recent growth and success.
“Our trade relationship with China is critical to our company. I really can’t think of any relationship besides NAFTA that is more critical to Cummins,” says Linebarger.
And here is a tweet from Cummins —
"As leaders, it is our responsibility to tell the truth about trade. It is actually what adds jobs rather than what takes them away." –@Cummins CEO Tom Linebarger. Watch live now via @BizRoundtable: https://t.co/n1e5z1eq6M pic.twitter.com/gtNw3UAxrq
