Brian’s picks – March 22

1) My wife, who has sung in worship and other bands and at weddings, can verify that I can sing only one way — badly. Oh, and off-key to boot. So I tip my artistic hat to the the Barbershop Harmony Society District of Indiana and Kentucky. It is coordinating the 2018 Spring Barbershop Convention from noon to 11:30 p.m. Friday at Columbus North High School, 1400 25th St. Weekend activities include a formal quartet and chorus contest, an informal tag singing contest and more. Sessions are split between two venues: Columbus North and Hilton Garden Inn in the Taylorsville/Edinburgh area. Single-session tickets are $20. Information: cardinaldistrict.org.

2) Organizers of the Columbus Bluegrass Jamboree put a serious emphasis on the jam part of their gathering from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Donner Center, 739 22nd St. in Columbus. In fact, the open jam session for anyone interested begins at 4 p.m. Roger Brown, Dan Branaman, Straightline and James White & Deercreek will all perform bluegrass and bluegrass gospel beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted. Food concession items will be available for purchase. Information: columbusbluegrassjamboree.com.
