Driver, passenger arrested after traffic stop near construction zone in North Vernon

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon police arrested two people after a traffic stop near a construction zone.

North Vernon police officers were sent to the area of State Road 750 near Highway 50 about a possible intoxicated driver heading towards the Butlerville area in a silver Honda car, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, North Vernon police spokesman.

A witness was able to give officers the license plate of the car, he said. Officer Wes Thayer located the car after watching it speed in a construction zone after turning on to State Road 750, Richmond said. Thayer requested that Jennings County Sheriff Department Sgt. Allen Ritchie and K9 Vampir check the car and the dog alerted to the odor of drugs inside the vehicle, Richmond said.

Officers detained the driver, Storme Schachel, 37, North Vernon, and the passenger, Richard Simone, 42, North Vernon, and a search warrant was obtained to strip search and search body cavities of the individuals, Richmond said.
