Everett Ray Burton

YORKTOWN, VA.

Everett Ray “Burt” Burton, 79, was born June 19, 1938 in Edinburgh, and died in Yorktown, Virginia, on March 22, 2018.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Courtenay Harding of Yorktown, and a daughter, Shannon B. Savage of Perth Australia; three grandsons, Oliver Everett Savage, Isaac Douglass Savage and Eli Thomas Savage, as well as his ex-wife, Susan L. Burton, also of Perth. He is also survived by three stepchildren, Dr. Robert Harding, his wife, Dr. Adrienne Giuffra; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Caroline, all of Woodstock, Maryland, as well as Brooke Harding of Emmitsburg, Maryland and Ashley Harding of Germantown, Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elza and Lydia Burton of Edinburgh.

He graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, and attended Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, California and Thomas Nelson Community College in Newport News, Virginia.

During the 1950s, Mr. Burton was a member of the U.S. Air Force in Germany and later worked at Edwards Air Force Base, where he worked with Astronaut Neil Armstrong on a project.

He moved to Virginia to work as a contractor at NASA-Langley in the Analysis and Computational Division for 42 years.

He loved being with family members including the dogs, listening to The Four Freshmen sing as well as gardening with azaleas, roses and blueberries.

He had a wicked sense of humor, an innate curiosity about the way the world worked and relished traveling.

He had many friends and will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life gathering from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. at 2nd Street Bistro in Newport News on Sunday, March 25. Bring pictures and/or stories.
