LINDEN, N.J. — A hit-and-run drunk driver who killed a Rutgers University graduate one day before the victim was due to receive his diploma is now headed to prison.

Union County prosecutors say Eduardo Perez received an eight-year sentence on Friday. The 34-year-old Elizabeth man had pleaded guilty in January to vehicular homicide.

Perez was driving an SUV on the wrong side of the road and speeding when he struck Mujahid Henry in Linden in May 2017. Henry was thrown into a nearby parked car.

Authorities say Perez drove off and later abandoned the vehicle in Elizabeth after striking several parked cars.

Henry had earned his bachelor’s degree in January 2017 from the School of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers-Newark. He was due to get his degree at the school’s commencement.
