KENNEWICK, Wash. — A Benton County jury has found that the Kennewick School District was not liable in the abuse of two former students by a predatory teacher.

The Tri-City Herald reports that jurors on Monday could not reach a decision related to two other former students and their claims ended in a mistrial.

The former students sued the district, saying it knew or should have known that longtime teacher and coach William Pickerel was a danger and failed to protect them.

Pickerel, now 82, pleaded guilty in 2009 to molesting students on overnight trips. The trips weren’t organized by the district.

In all, 15 former students have sued the district over Pickerel. The case was split into four trials.

One trial ended in an undisclosed settlement last year. Two trials have not yet been scheduled.
