COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Virginia power company says if South Carolina lawmakers pass a bill removing the monthly charge for two nuclear plants that will not be built then it will likely withdraw a merger offer.
Dominion Energy CEO Tom Farrell says the company’s offer to return up to $1,000 to SCANA customers and promise not to raise rates for three years is fair. Dominion is trying to buy the South Carolina utility.
State senators started debating a proposal Wednesday that would remove the $37 million a month SCANA subsidiary South Carolina Electric & Gas charges for the nuclear plants that were abandoned last summer after 10 years of planning and construction. The bill has passed the House.
SCE&G customers have paid about $2 billion for the unfinished reactors.
