BELTON, Mo. — The Belton police department says officers fatally shot a man after they were called because the man was causing a disturbance in the neighborhood.

The shooting happened Sunday night in Belton, about 30 miles (4.83 kilometers) miles south of Kansas City.

Belton police Lt. Travis George says police responded to the home at least twice Sunday after complaints that the man was causing problems in the area.

George says a 38-year-old man was shot after officers went inside the home when the man refused to leave. His name hasn’t been released.

Neighbors told Fox4 News that the man had been threatening people with a knife and yelling racial slurs before officers arrived.

The officers involved, who were not seriously hurt, are on administrative leave.
