BEND, Ore. — A defense attorney who walked out on his client during a court proceeding in Bend has been replaced.
The Bulletin newspaper reports the trial of Dylan Sullivan — scheduled to begin in two weeks — has been postponed so his new lawyer can prepare.
His former attorney, Scott Upham, shocked the courtroom last month when he walked out of the Deschutes County courthouse mid-hearing, leaving Sullivan alone at the defense table.
Upham had been challenging the judge’s qualifications to hear the case, and apparently quit in protest. He has not returned calls seeking comment.
Sullivan is facing felony sex abuse charges stemming from his time as a high school basketball coach in La Pine.
Upham had represented Sullivan for nearly a year and filed numerous motions on his behalf. Sullivan’s new lawyer, Whitney Boise, has until Friday to decide whether to adopt any of Upham’s motions.
