Fire destroys garage on Rocky Ford

Fire destroyed a two-car garage and a vehicle at a home on Rocky Ford Road.

Columbus firefighters were called to 5305 Rocky Ford Road at 2:34 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a fully-engulfed garage, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

The wood-frame garage, with a 2004 Jeep Liberty inside, was owned by Paul and Melissa Thompson, Wilson said. Firefighters had the fire under control by 2:55 p.m. The garage and contents were declared a total loss, but a monetary amount for the loss has not been determined, Wilson said.

The fire has been ruled accidental, according to firefighters.

The garage had electrical service and the homeowners said they had been having mechanical problems with the Jeep prior to the fire, which might have contributed to how the fire started, Wilson said.

The family was not home when the fire happened, but arrived back home to find firefighters there, Wilson said.

No injuries were reported, Wilson said.
