BRUNSWICK, Maine — Officials in Brunswick have tabled plans for a new homeless shelter because of zoning concerns.

WGME-TV reports the Brunswick Town Council passed an emergency moratorium Tuesday in order to stop building on Tedford Housing’s project. The proposed shelter would combine Tedford’s two emergency shelters.

Officials say the new shelter isn’t covered by zoning laws.

Tedford Housing Executive Director Craig Phillips says the organization is struggling to serve the area. Phillips says the new facility would double the amount of beds.

Officials plan to discuss construction at a public hearing on April 17.
