Man faces DUI charge after 4-vehicle crash

A Columbus man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a four-vehicle crash downtown on Wednesday.

Police officers responded to Eighth and Washington streets in Columbus shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday regarding the accident, said Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department.

Upon arriving, officers struggled with Jonathan Z. Burge, 23, of Columbus, the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the crash, Harris said.

Witnesses reported that Burge disregarded the traffic signal at 11th and Washington street before crashing into the back of another vehicle at a high rate of speed, Harris said.

Burge and the driver of that vehicle — Jacob Atkins, 32, of Greenwood — were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital with minor injuries, he said. The two other vehicles involved in the crash were unoccupied.

After obtaining a blood test from Burge, he was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of driving while intoxicated, Harris said.
