Duke Energy helicopter joins search for missing kayaker

A Duke Energy helicopter out of Plainfield is joining the search for a missing kayaker in Bartholomew County today.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department began a search Thursday morning for Keygan Matlock, 26, 3950 Deer Court in Tannehill Park, who was reported missing by his family.

Searchers spent Thursday combing the Driftwood and Flatrock rivers using drones and an Indiana State Police helicopter searching for Matlock, who is believed to have entered the Driftwood in his kayak late Wednesday morning, traveling south toward Columbus.

He was spotted by a resident who lives along the Driftwood between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday but has not been seen since.

The Duke helicopter will fly with a pilot and spotter and search in tandem with an Indiana State Police helicopter that is also flying today, said Lew Middleton, Duke spokesman.

Boats are not being used in the search today because the water remains too high and conditions are too dangerous, said DNR spokeswoman Angela Goldman.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Matlock is asked to call the DNR law enforcement division at 812-837-9536.
