GIRLS TENNIS

North opens with win

The co-No. 13-ranked Columbus North girls tennis team opened its season Thursday with a 5-0 win against Seymour.

The Bull Dogs dropped only nine games in winning all five matches in straight sets.

Yijaing Zhao beat Grace Otte 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Madelyn Sanders downed Sandra Cerinci 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Shweta Srinivasan blanked Chloe Bryden 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs.

Servane Cloteaux and Ali Bergman beat Kristina Griffin and Madison Pifer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Jenny Jarnigan and Jaline Tay topped Mallory Moore and Avery Ragon 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Shawe nips Panthers

MADISON — Jennings County won both doubles matches in three sets, but Madison Shawe pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 singles to claim a 3-2 victory.

Maddy Hill and Callie Wilder beat Abigail Hill and Phoebe Grote 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (3) at No. 1 doubles, and Abby Rowlett and Courtney Lykins downed Kelly Hesse and Cayden Hambrick 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (6) at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers.

Jennings’ Rebecca Driver fell to Megan Hesse 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Hailey Brown lost to Katrina Gobert 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Ellie Hearne fell to Kate Grote 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Cougars edge Spartans

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran pulled out a pair of third-set tiebreakders to open the season with a 3-2 win against Southwestern (Shelby).

Courtney Barker won 3-6, 6-3, (10-7) at No. 1 singles, Lauren Fleetwood and Macey Prewitt prevailed 7-5, 3-6 (10-1) at No. 1 doubles and Katelyn Mensendiek and Bekah Brown triumphed 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles for the Cougars. Abby Schult fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Lauren Voss lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Bull Dogs drop slugfest

Columbus North hit three home runs, but Shelbyville hit four in handing the Bull Dogs an 18-7 loss

Haylee Acton, Bailey Lofton and Lilly Hurt all smacked two-run homers for the Bull Dogs (0-4). Sierra Norman went 3 for 4.

Cougars drop opener

SHELBYVILLE — South Decatur opened its season with an 11-0, five-inning Mid-Hoosier Conference loss at Southwestern (Shelby).

Sam Goodfellow had a double for the Cougars. Their only other hit was a single by Chloe Smith.

Stars topple Eagles

NASHVILLE — Bedford North Lawrence held Brown County to five hits in a 4-1 victory.

Grant Suding had an RBI-single for the Eagles (1-3).

Bull Dogs down Owls

Columbus North opened its season with a 239 1/2 to 108 1/2 win against Seymour.

Josh Holley won his flight of the long jump (12 feet, 9 inches) and his heats of the 100 meters (14.7 seconds) and 400 (1:10.2); and Bailey Hester took his flight of the long jump (19-5) and his heat of the 100 (14.7).

Dalton Kirk (34-2) and Noah Algee (42-9 1/2) captured their flights of the shot put, and Ross Gill won his heat of the 400 (58.2). The Bull Dogs took a boys 4×100 relay (56.5) and a girls 4×100 relay (1:06.3).

Jennings girls win

SEYMOUR — Jennings County’s girls opened the season with a tri-meet win at Seymour. The Panthers scored 77 points to 67 for Seymour and 23 for Bedford North Lawrence.

Bedford won the boys meet with 63 points to 53 for Jennings and 51 for Seymour.

Alexis Harsh led the Panther girls with wins in the long (15-8), 100 (12.9) and 200 (28.4). Emma McPeek won the high jump (5-1), Kayla Truesdell took the discus (115-4), Izzy Daughtery captured the 400 (1:04.3) and Jennings won the 4×100 relay (52.8).

Carter Leak led the Panther boys with wins in the 1,600 (4:49.1) and 3,200 (10:31.1). Blaich Blanton took the discus (121-10), Brooks Wathen captured the 110 hurdles (17.0), Isaiah Ertel won the 300 hurdles (45.2) and Jennings took the 4×800 relay (8:53.2).

BOYS GOLF

Panthers win tri match

NORTH VERNON — Bryce Kirchner won medalist honors with a 40 to lead Jennings County to a tri-match win at St. Annes. The Panthers shot 171 to 179 for Greensburg and 221 for North Decatur.

Hunter Conrad carded a 41 for Jennings. Austin Roscoe added a 43, Samson Miller shot 47, Joe Kelley had a 49 and Justin Gasper finished with a 51.
