Get rid of unwanted items at recycling center for Earth Day

Earth Day! Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District celebrates Earth Day every year by hosting an event at the Columbus/Bartholomew Recycling Center, 720 S. Mapleton St. in Columbus.

Come celebrate with us from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21. Festivities for the event include:

Amnesty Day for hard-to-dispose-of-items, 8 to 3: Residents may bring up to two refrigerant-containing appliances at no cost, up to two outdated propane tanks (gas grill) at no cost and up to four personal vehicle tires at no cost (rims must be removed, no tractor tires).

Plant swap, 10 to noon: Bring a plant or gardening supply to trade. An experienced gardener will be on hand to answer your gardening questions.

Hot dog roast, 11 to 1: Hot dogs, chips and soda for free at the 3R’s Pavilion while supplies last.

Children’s activities, sponsored by kidscommons, 9 to noon: kidscommons will be on hand with a reuse art activity.

Mulch/compost loading 8 to noon (weather permitting): Residents of Bartholomew County can stop by with their truck or trailer and get one scoop of your choice of mulch or compost for free.

Document shredding, 1 to 3 (time change from previous years): Speedy Shred will be available to shred residential quantities of documents.

Giveaways sponsored by Toyota Industrial Equipment Management: Earth Day T-shirts will be given to children 12 and younger, who must be present, while supplies last. Also, plum tree starts will be given in limited quantities while supplies last.

Education displays: The RC Flyers will create reuse airplanes and have a display. Book Express-Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. will bring gently used books to trade or donate. Aly Knight will present her high school senior project, a bee hotel, and an interactive guide for interested beginners to gather awareness and get involved within the bee community.
