Bridge overlay projects to begin next month

Staff Reports

Two thin bridge deck overlay projects in Jennings County will begin next month, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

RAM Construction tentatively plans to place a three-eighths-inch polymeric epoxy overlay in two lifts atop the single-span U.S. 50 bypass bridge over CSX railroad tracks west of North Vernon in Jennings County. Overlay operations will occur north of construction activities for the U.S. 50 roundabout at County Road 450W, according to an IDOT news release.

Overlaying the 115-foot bridge deck over CSX tracks — tentatively scheduled to start in late May — is designed to seal the driving surface from weather degradation and extend the structure’s service life. Chips of basalt rock will be mixed with the polymeric epoxy to provide a long-lasting friction course for driver safety. The $335,442 contract includes any needed repairs, INDOT said.

Also included in the project is a three-span State Road 3 structure over Sand Creek, located between North Vernon and Westport, 4.56 miles north of State Road 7 in Jennings County, INDOT said.

Temporary signals will control single-lane traffic flow during overlay operations at each bridge.
