SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities have identified the man fatally shot by police following a pursuit through two homes in suburban Salt Lake City.
West Valley City Police said in a news release Monday that the deceased is 20-year-old Elijah James Smith.
Police say an officer approached Smith on Sunday for matching the description of a suspect involved in the robbery of a nearby cellphone store. Smith ran away and was chased first into the garage of one house, then into a second home in which three children were alone.
Three police officers entered that home. One fired on Smith, killing him.
A different police agency is investigating the shooting. That includes reviewing video from body cameras the officers were wearing.
Authorities say the officer has been with the department nearly two years.
