Olympians raising money for weight room iPads

Columbus East strength coach Scott Pherson is hoping to ditch the paper and binders and go to an electronic method of documenting his athletes’ and students’ performances in the weight room.

So for her senior project, McKenna Downey is attempting to raise $2,000 to purchase five iPads for the school. Saturday is the last day to donate.

“If we have an iPad, they can go to the team app and, boom, it’s going to show everything,” Pherson said. “They can just click on their name, input their data and do their workout. It will really streamline the process and make it more efficient.”

Downey, a diver on the swim team and pole vaulter on the track and field squad, coorinated a lift-a-thon at the beginning of year, where people could pledge so much per pound. She put together a video where a couple of players from the Class 5A state champion football team demonstrated the improper and proper techniques for doing squats.

Pherson said he can enter the lifts onto the iPad with the correct technique.

“They’re going to hear me say it, and they’re going to see me demo it,” Pherson said. “But they’re kids. They’re going to forget. Maybe they need to see it in a video, and now they have that through the app, and they can even do that on the iPads.”
