North pole vaulter wins at Midwest Prep Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS — Brigham Kleinhenz won the pole vault at 14 feet, 3 inches, Saturday to lead Columbus North track and field athletes in the Midwest Prep Invitational at Lawrence Central.

Preston Terrell finished second in the boys high jump (6-0) for the Bull Dogs. Logan Abbott took third in the shot put (47-0) and discus (144-8), and Daveed Jolley was third in the long jump (19-10 3/4).

For the North girls, Sami Heathcote and Adrienne Salemme tied for second in the pole vault (9-6). Heathcote finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.75 seconds), and Jahna Smiley tied for fifth in the high jump (5-10).

Jennings County’s Kayla Truesdell finished second in the girls shot (39-8) and third in the discus (127-9).

Cougars finish sixth

GREENSBURG — South Decatur’s boys and girls teams both finished fifth in Friday’s North Decatur Invitational. Knightstown won both titles.

Trent Nobbe led the Cougar boys with second-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (17.0) and 300 hurdles (45.1). Sierra Kalli took third in the girls 3,200 (15:23), and South Decatur was third in the 4×800 relay (12:16).

Bull Dogs take 5th

GREENWOOD — Columbus North finished fifth behind four ranked teams in Saturday’s Center Grove Invitational at Hickory Stick.

No. 1 Center Grove edged No. 2 Carmel 285-286 for the title. No. 6 Bedford North Lawrence finished third with a 309, followed by No. 17 Franklin at 310 and the Bull Dogs at 325.

Henry Kiel led North with a 75. Drew Smith carded an 81, while Luke VanDeventer added an 84, Jacob Niedbalski shot 85 and Jackson Kerber had an 88.

Lancers top Cougars

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh jumped out to a 15-0 lead after four innings Friday and posted a 15-5, five-inning Mid-Hoosier Conference win against South Decatur.

Zach Murphy went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and threw a six-hitter for the Lancers (2-2, 2-2). Ryan Gaston went 2 for 4 with a double and five RBIs, and Bryce Burton went 2 for 2.

Jalen Winchester went 2 for 3 for the Cougars (0-4, 0-4).
