Students’ projects benefits homeless

A project by two elementary school students in Columbus will benefit two agencies serving the homeless.

Sydney Graham and Sophia Begley, fifth-graders at Columbus Signature Academy — Lincoln, collected more than 1,100 items including personal hygiene items, laundry and cleaning products and food.

The items were donated to Brighter Days Housing and Horizon House.

The two students started the project over Christmas break after seeing an homeless individual near Walmart on State Road 46 on Columbus’ west side. Donation boxes with a description of their project were then placed at several businesses and public locations such as Hotel Indigo, the Bartholomew County Library and the Hamilton Community Center & Ice Arena.

Graham also said she hopes the donations will help improve the lives of those less fortunate.

Brett Findley, principal at CSA — Lincoln, commended the students for stepping up to help others.

“They’re phenomenal students and they represent all of our other students here who strive to make our community a better place,” he said. “It says a lot of who they are as young people. If you want to make a difference, you can.”
