East coach wins Griddy Award as top offensive coordinator

Columbus East racked up 749 points and 7,020 total yards on its way to winning the Class 5A state football championship last fall.

Sunday afternoon at The Trophy Club in Lebanon, Olympians head coach Bob Gaddis, the architect of that offense, was honored with a Griddy Award as the state’s top offensive coordinator. The Griddys have been presented since 2007 by Paul Condry and his team at the Indiana Football Digest, as well as Regional Radio Sports Network.

“I had no idea that we had scored that many points and had that many yards,” Gaddis said. “We’ve had a lot of good offensive players.”

One of those players, senior running back Jamon Hogan, was named Class 5A Player of the Year. Hogan, senior quarterback Josh Major and senior offensive lineman Mark Sciutto made the Big-State team.

Gaddis’ award was for all classes. He credited offensive line coach David Miller, wide receivers coach Jonathan Martin, running backs coach Pete Manowitz and tight ends coach Scott Pherson with helping the offense put up 49.5 points a game, which was second best in the state for all classes.

“I still enjoy that part of it — calling the plays,” Gaddis said. “That doesn’t mean that there aren’t other guys on our staff that do a good job. David Miller does a great job with our offensive line, and he’s a big part of what we do. Jonathan Martin helped with our offense this year, and so did Pete Manowitz and Scott Pherson. I’ve just always been the play-caller.”

Meanwhile, Columbus North junior quarterback Trenton Kelley made the Prime Time 25 for next season and will be on the cover of the Indiana Football Digest, which will be released in July.

North senior nets honor

Columbus North senior Jenna Borger has been named honorable mention on the Associated Press All-State girls basketball team.

Borger averaged 11.2 points this season to lead the Bull Dogs to a 17-7 record and a Conference Indiana championship. She also averaged 4.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals and shot team-bests of 39 percent from 3-point range and 93 percent from the free-throw line.
