Olympians take second in Jasper Invitational

JASPER — Columbus East rolled to a 13-3 baseball win against Evansville North in five innings in the semifinals before falling to perennial power Jasper 2-1 in 10 innings in the championship game of the Jasper Invitational.

Drew Hasson threw a two-hitter and went 2 for 4 at the plate against Evansville Central. Dalton Back went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs, Klayton Brummett went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBis, Alec Burnett went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Cole Gilley went 2 for 4 and Jonah Wichman and Nash Murphy each had two RBIs.

Murphy lined a two-out RBI-single in the seventh to tie Jasper. Gilley allowed four hits over the first seven innings for the Olympians (6-5).

Tigers sweep Jets

HOPE — Class A No. 1 Hauser dropped both games of a doubleheader to Lawrenceburg, falling 7-5 and 11-5.

The Jets led 5-0 in fifth inning of the first game when pitcher Sam Meek was hit by a line drive and had to leave. Alex Pattingill had two RBIs.

In the second game, Sean Miller went 2 for 4 for Hauser (9-4). Trey Johnson had two RBIs.

Columbus Christian falls

Columbus Christian ouhit Providence Cristo Rey 5-3 in the first game and matched the Wolves with 10 hits in the second game, but dropped both five-inning games 9-3 and 18-16.

Tyler Bumbalough had two RBIs in the first game. C.J. Reed threw a three-hitter.

Bumbalough and Gabe Ridder each went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the second game for the Crusaders (1-2). Kyle Foster went 2 for 3, Reed went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Josh Jones had a double and two RBIs.

Panthers lose twice

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County matched East Central with 10 hits in the second game, but the Trojans completed a doubleheader sweep with an 11-8 win.

East Central won the first game 8-3. Josh Pettit went 2 for 3 for the Panthers.

In the second game, Owen Deaton went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for Jennings (2-7). Jakob Kirby went 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.

Miners blank Eagles

NASHVILLE — Eli Snider threw a two hitter, but Brown County was held to one hit in a 3-0 loss to Linton.

Branden Leslie had the lone hit for the Eagles (3-9).

Lancers drop pair

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh dropped a pair of games, falling to Indianapolis Lutheran 7-0 and Eminence 9-8 in eight innings.

After managing only one hit against Lutheran, the Lancers (3-6) pounded out 15 hits against Eminence. Tavian Cosby went 3 for 5 with a double, Parker Bryant went 3 for 5, Ryan Gaston went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Zach Giles went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs and Evan Armel went 2 for 5.

GIRLS Tennis

Bull Dogs edge Cougars

No. 14 Columbus North played without its No. 1 and No. 3 singles players, but still managed a 3-2 Conference Indiana win against Bloomington North.

Mariana Martinez beat Katy Rusche 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (6-2, 3-0). Madelyn Sanders and Eva Chevalier downed Kaylee Ryan and Isabel Flynn 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Ali Bergman and Servanne Cloteaux topped Rachael Barrett and Jade Vasquez 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Columbus North’s Shweta Srinivasan fell to Joy Bhatacharya 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Paige Bishop lost to Lillian McAfee 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Olympians down Quakers

Columbus East pulled out two three-set matches and another with tiebreakers in both sets to claim a 4-1 win against Plainfield.

Louna Prince beat Alyssa Rink 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Ayana Nomura downed Emma Eldridge 7-6 (4), 7-6 (12) at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (3-4). Kathryn Hodzen and Megna Chari topped Kiersten Martin and Claire Harper 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Madelyn Rhodes and Emie Kiser beat Sondra Vernego and Neyven Garal 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

East’s Jenna Shoaf fell to Hanna Snider 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles.

SOFTball

Jets topple Tigers

HOPE — Tessa Sims threw a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks and went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead Class A No. 4 Hauser to a 6-1 win against Triton Central.

Hunter Crain went 3 for 3 for the Jets (7-2). Katie Taylor went 2 for 3 with a triple.

Panthers split games

GREENWOOD — Jennings County split a pair of games, and Columbus North dropped both of its contests in the Center Grove Classic.

The Panthers opened with a 10-2 win against Greenwood. Winning pitcher Gabby Mahoney went 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, and Madi Skinner went 2 for 3.

Jennings (6-4) then fell to 4A No. 1 Center Grove 11-1 in five innings. Lexi Brown went 2 for 2 with a double.

Center Grove beat the Bull Dogs 10-0 in five innings. Brittany Reichenba went 2 for 2 with a double, and Meghan Waggoner gave up only three earned runs in four innings.

North (0-12) fell to Greenwood 4-2. Sierra Norman went 3 for 3 with a home run, and Bailey Lofton went 2 for 2 with a double.

Lancers, Saints split

EDINBURGH — Class A No. 10 Edinburgh split a pair of games with Indianapolis Lutheran, winning 3-1 and falling 12-2 in five innings.

Maddi Clark threw a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts and went 2 for 3 with a home run in the opener. Sidney Beier went 2 for 2 with two RBIs.

Beier had a home run and two RBIs in the second game for the Lancers (7-3).

Shiners blank Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur pounded out 10 hits, but couldn’t dent the plate in a 17-0, five-inning loss to Rising Sun.

Meghan Manlief went 2 for 2 with a double for the Cougars (0-8). Brooke Owens went 2 for 3.

TRACK AND FIELD

Panthers take fifth

FRANKLIN — Jennings County’s boys and girls both finished fifth in Friday’s Franklin Invitational. Hamilton Southeastern won both meets.

Dalton Craig won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 5.64 seconds) and teamed with Franklin Sanders, Ryan Gasper, Jason Gasper to take the 4×800 relay (8:29.06) to lead the Panther boys. Kayla Truesdell won the shot put (40 feet) and finished third in the discus (124-8) to lead the girls.
