Local driver picks up first win of season

Randy Petro of Columbus scored the win in the super stock feature on April 28 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. The veteran driver was competing in his first race of the 2018 and drove a car owned by Ross Smith of Columbus.

Danny Hupp of Scipio was second, with Jaden Mayhan of Elizabethtown taking third. Bobby Davis of Columbus, in his first race of the season, ran fourth, with Bobby Burton of Columbus taking a career-best fifth place finish in the feature.

Mark Barber of North Vernon won the crate late model feature. Tyler Collins of North Vernon finished second, followed by Paul Ortman of Seymour, Tory Collins of North Vernon and Bill Sheets of Milan.

Troy Clark of North Vernon captured the pure stock main event, winning over Mark Bruce of Commiskey, Bryson Clark of North Vernon, Seth Hull of Versailles and Ross Smith.

Donnie Modesty of Seymour picked up his first win of the season, taking the top money in the hornet division. Gregg O’Neill II took runner-up honors with Dan Smith, Andy Anderson and Gage Clark rounding out the top five.

Darland tops USAC at Bloomington

Making his 700th career start in USAC competition, Dave Darland captured his 60th career series victory in the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series on April 27 at Bloomington Speedway. Chris Windom finished in second, with Logan Seavey placing third. Chad Boespflug and C.J. Leary finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jason Hehman of Brownstown won the super stock main over Brad Cummings of Bedford, Jack Frye of Bloomington, Sam Arthur of Bloomington and Chip Slagle of Westfield.

Ryan Tusing of Santa Claus picked up the feature win in the RaceSaver sprints. Luke Bland of Bloomington was second, with John Paynter Jr., Andy Bradley of Bloomington and Kendall Ruble of Vincennes trailing.

Gaines at Lawrenceburg

Second-generation driver Dickie Gaines won the sprint car feature on April 28 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Dallas Hewitt finished second, followed by Thomas Meseraull, Garrett Abrams and Matt Westfall. Matt Hamilton, who won the modified feature at Route 44 Speedway in Liberty on April 27, came back to win April 28 at Lawrenceburg over Scotty Kincaid, Kyle Schornick, David Spille and Aaron Branham.

Thomas wins at Haubstadt

Kevin Thomas Jr. won the April 28 AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car race at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. C.J. Leary was second, with Logan Seavey taking his second straight third-place finish. Darland, who won at Bloomington the night before, was fourth, and Justin Grant took fifth.

Grant takes Silver Crown

Justin Grant sped to victory in the USAC Silver Crown “Sumar Classic” on Sunday at Terre Haute Action Track. Kody Swanson would run second, with Tyler Courtney taking the third spot. Chris Windom and C.J. Leary completed the top five. Joss Moffatt of Columbus was 21st at the finish.

Stewart takes two seconds

Tony Stewart was in competition with the USCS Sprint Cars last weekend. On April 27, he finished second after starting in sixth at Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, Kentucky. The next night, on April 28, Stewart ventured to 104 Speedway in Lexington, Tennessee, where again he posted a runner-up finish.

Brownstown results

Shelby Miles of Bloomington captured the super late model feature on April 28 at Brownstown Speedway. Matt Bex of Avoca was second, with Jared Bailey of Bedford, Alan Magner of North Vernon and Dusty Chapman of Bedford completing the top five.

Marty O’Neal of Spencer took the Indiana late model series main event. O’Neal drives for Larry Hartwell of North Vernon. Steven Godsey of Bedford was second, and opening night winner Tyler Neal of Paragon finished third. Shelby Miles and Tyler Cain of Seymour rounded out the top five.

Seymour’s Ryan Thomas won the open wheel modified feature over Jeremy Owens of North Vernon, Jeremy Hines of Seymour, Jacoby Hines of Nineveh and Matt Boknecht of Seymour.

Boknecht came back to win the super stock main over Jason Hehman of Brownstown, Aubrey Eagan of Bedford, Branden Carr of Scottsburg and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia.

Dusten Carr of Underwood handled the pure stock feature race over Houston Roark of Dupont, Josh Hayes of Seymour, William Burton of North Vernon and Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh.

Hoffman takes Eldora cash

Nick Hoffman inherited the late model feature victory at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, when apparent winner Jason Jameson was four pounds light at the scales, which resulted in his disqualification. Hoffman, who finished second, then picked up the $5,000 first-place prize money.

Devin Gilpin of Columbus was second, followed by Jimmy Mars, Kody Evans and Jon Henry. Travis Stickler won the open wheel modified feature.

Columbus racers at Florence tonight

Columbus late model racers Devin Gilpin, Zak Blackwood and Nathan Vawter will be at Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, tonight for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Ralph Latham Memorial paying $12,000 to win. For more info, visit florencespeedway.com.

This week in racing history

From 50 years ago in 1968, Don Nordhorn won his second straight sprint car feature at Bloomington Speedway. Bob Kinser was second followed by Dick Gaines, Cecil Beavers and Bobby Black.

Also, from 1968, the 25th Street Speedway in Columbus ran its season opener with hometown driver Gene Petro taking the 50-lap feature win.

In 1968 at Brownstown Speedway, it was Gene Petro taking the late model feature victory. Ray Godsey was second, and Paul Crockett finished third. Gene Dalton and Jack Owens completed the top-five drivers.

This weekend 40 years ago in 1978, Bob Fleetwood won the late model feature at Brownstown over Dennis Boknecht, Ira Bastin, Jim Curry and Paul Crockett. Russ Petro won the hobby stock feature over Darrell Smallwood, Mack Pace, Tony Moore and Tony Godsey.

From 30 years ago in 1988, Russ Petro won the late model feature at Twin Cities. Gary Barrow was second with Lee Fleetwood, Robert Brison and John Warner rounding out the top five. Rolla Millspaugh won the street stock main event over Mark Clark, Phil Fultz, Merrill Wilson and Taulby Donnell.

Also in 1988 this weekend, John Gill captured the late model feature at Brownstown over Ray Godsey, Ernie Barrow, Gary Cooksey and Doug Ault. Earl Plessinger took top honors in the street stock division over Steve Kimberlin, Joe Johnson, Scott Patman and Mike Fields. Patman won the bomber feature with Jerry Allman, Jay Deckard, Ray Hughes and Rob Benton trailing.

From 20 years ago in 1998 at Brownstown, it was Bart Hartman taking the win in the late model feature over Steve Barnett, Gary Stuhler, Steve Shaver and Terry Phillips. Earl Plessinger won the street stock main over Rusty Smiley, Perry Bruce, Joe Lucas and Tim Clark. Ray Godsey Jr. was the bomber feature winner over Todd Richey, Charlie Stevens Jr., Nelson Gingery and David Hill. Dwayne Klem won the Indiana Enduro series event.
