California congressman with local ties to speak at fundraiser

A California congressman investigating Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election will headline a fundraiser for the Bartholomew County Democratic Party.

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) will attend a fundraising reception from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hotel Indigo, 400 Brown St. Although admission to Sunday’s reception is $100 at the door, advance tickets may be purchased online for $75 at barthdems.org.

The congressman has relatives in Columbus and had a pre-arranged visit to the city that had been planned during the time of the fundraiser.

Swalwell, 37, is the ranking member of the CIA Subcommittee for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. He is among those who are looking into Russian meddling into the 2016 presidential election.

“He’s been involved in all activity around that investigation,” Bartholomew County Democratic Central Committee Chairman Bob Hyatt said. “Clearly, he’s not going to give out classified information, but we do hope he’ll talk about what it’s like in Washington these days.”

In recent weeks, Swalwell has been interviewed on national network news programs about Gina Haspel, who was confirmed Wednesday on a 54-46 vote as is President Donald Trump’s pick to head the CIA.

Haspel will be the first female director of the CIA.

But Swalwell has also been making news this month by proposing a mandatory buyback of all military-style semi-automatic weapons, as well as publicly urging Trump to divest himself of all private businesses while in office.

Just prior to Sunday’s reception, the congressman will meet one-on-one with local Democratic Party members, Hyatt said.

Since the reception is a political fundraiser, the congressman will likely talk about what he believes it will take for Democrats to win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives this year, Hyatt said.

While there is expected to be a question and answer session near the end of the reception, it will be kept short because Swalwell has to catch a flight back to Washington, D.C. immediately after the event, Hyatt said.
