Busy weekend for area race tracks

Marty O’Neal of Spencer won the crate late model feature on May 12 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. The veteran driver behind the wheel of a MasterSbilt Race Car owned by Larry Hartwell of North Vernon won the feature race over Tyler Cain of Seymour, Mark Barber of North Vernon, Keegan Cox of Franklin and Joey Jones of Borden.

Troy Clark of North Vernon was victorious in pure stock special, winning the top prize over William Burton of North Vernon, Mark Bruce of Commiskey, Keaton Streeval of North Vernon and Dusten Carr of Underwood.

Danny Hupp took the feature win in the super stock division over Branden Carr of Scottsburg, Jayden Mayhan of Elizabethtown, Ross Smith of Columbus and Charles Newby of Seymour.

Andy Anderson of North Vernon won the hornet feature, defeating Gregg O’Neill of Mooresville, Jamie Laufer of Deputy, Austin Perry of North Vernon and Tony Napier Jr. of North Vernon.

Paragon hosts season opener

The Paragon Speedway opened its 2018 racing season May 12. Jake Scott took the win in the sprint car division over Brandon Spencer, Drew Abel of North Vernon, Andrew Prather and Troy Link.

Chris Hillman won the super stock main event over Steve Hawkins, Scotty Massie, Greg Garrison and Warren Hopkins. Daniel Hobbs took the win in the hornet class over Chris Hillman Jr., Felisha Lucas of Edinburgh, Mark Gott and Reece Novak. Jeff Beggs was victorious in the bomber class.

Abrams gets first career win

Garrett Abrams of Rushville won his fist career sprint car feature on May 12 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Abrams got around Columbus’ Joss Moffatt with four laps to go and then had to hold off a furious last-lap charge from Moffatt for the win. Moffatt had his best finish of the year with his runner-up finish. Shawn Westerfeld of Aurora was third with Braxton Cummings of Bedford and Mike Miller of Cincinnati completing the top-five drivers.

Matt Hamilton of Aurora returned to Victory Lane at Lawrenceburg with his victory in the open wheel modified class. Kyle Schornick of Milan was second, with Brad Wieck of Cincinnati taking third ahead of Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg and David Spille of West Harrison.

Don Grace took the top spot in the pure stock division, winning over Steve King, Dalton Fleenor, Danny Eichler and Dalton Smith. Cordell Moore won the hornet feature over Kevin McCoy, Michael Freimuth II, Dallas Miller and Travis Butte.

USAC at Eldora

Brady Bacon and Chris Windom won the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car features on May 11 and 12 at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway on Rossburg, Ohio. Bacon took the main event on May 11 with a win over Robert Ballou, Windom, Justin Grant and Kevin Thomas Jr.

On May 12, it was Windom taking his turn going to Victory Lane over Tyler Courtney, Chase Stockon, Bacon and Ballou.

Outlaws at Eldora

The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars joined USAC At Eldora with Donny Schatz taking victories on May 11 and 12. The Tony Stewart Racing pilot beat Logan Schuchart to the finish line both nights. In the May 11 feature, Brad Sweet finished third, followed by Jac Haudenschild and Cole Duncan. Trailing Schatz and Schuchart on May 12 were Aaron Reutzel, Kraig Kinser and Tim Shaffer.

Owens wins at Bloomington

North Vernon’s Jeremy Owens won the open wheel modified feature on May 11 at Bloomington Speedway. Jordan Wever of Bloomington finished second to Owens, with Jacoby Hines if Nineveh placing third. Kenny Carmichael of Terre Haute took fourth, and Jeff Deckard of Ellettsville was fifth.

Josh Divine of Loogootee won the super stock main over Wes McClara of Coatesville, Jason Hehman of Brownstown, Jack Frye of Bloomington and Brad Cummings of Bedford.

Bedford’s Jeff Bland Jr. led all the way to win the sprint car feature race. Kody Swanson of Indianapolis took second place at the finish ahead of Brady Short of Bedford, Stevie Sussex of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jordan Kinser of Bedford.

Hensley wins at Florence

Robby Hensley won the late model feature on May 12 at Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky. Michael Chilton ran second, and Edinburgh’s Chad Stapleton took the third spot. Dustin Nobbe of Batesville and his father Ted rounded out the top-five cars.

Joey Kramer of Hanover won his first feature of the season, taking the open wheel modified feature race over Shawn Brown, J.T. Ayers, Pete Holt and Jimmy Lenex Jr.

Brad Rickels won the crate late model feature topping Connor Meade, Jordan Hedger, Jeff Alsip and Jim Couch.

Stewart takes 3 top 10s

Tony Stewart recorded a trio of top-10 finishes in his winged sprint car when he ventured to Kansas and Iowa last week. On May 9 at Humboldt Speedway in Kansas, Stewart finished third after starting in eighth place.

On May 10, Stewart competed at Lakeside Speedway also in Kansas and came home with another third-place finish. On May 12, Stewart participated at the historic Knoxville Raceway in Iowa for a regular 410-winged sprint car show, where he started 16th and finished eighth in a stout field of entrants.

This weekend, the 3-time NASCAR champion will race at Plymouth Dirt Track and Angell Park Speedway, both in Wisconsin.

Brownstown back in action

From 40 years ago in 1978, Bobby Black won the season-opening sprint car feature at Bloomington Speedway.

From 30 years ago in 1988, Danny Eichler won the late model feature at Twin Cities over Dill Whittymore, Daryl Herbert, Gary Barrow and Jeff Herbert. Mark Clark took the street stock feature over Tim Clark, Donnie Wilson, Troy Clark and Buddy Burton.

At Brownstown in 1988, Larry Phillips won the Kenny Simpson Memorial Race for late models over Ray Guss Jr., Larry Moore, Bob Pierce and C.J. Rayburn. Earl Plessinger won the street stock main event over Mark Barber, Tom Seadler, Rodney Riggle and Tommy Sallee.

From 1998 at Brownstown, Ray Godsey Jr. won the bomber feature racer over Todd Richey, Charlie Stevens Jr., Nelson Gingery and David Hill. Dwayne Klem won the Indiana Enduro Series race over Robbie Stewart, Tom Gossar, Jim Ruddick and Steve Trabue.
