Bachman Turner Overdrive founder headlines hospice concert

The Republic staff reports

Randy Bachman, 74, the creator and founder of Bachman-Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who, will headline the Our Hospice 32nd Annual Free Summer Concert on Labor Day weekend.

The concert will be Sept. 1 at Mill Race Park in Columbus.

Bachman is among an exclusive handful of artists who have topped the charts in two different bands: “American Woman” in 1970 with The Guess Who and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” in 1974 as leader and singer with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has earned more than 120 platinum, gold and silver records.

As host of the top-rated CBC and Sirius XM radio series “Randy Bachman’s Vinyl Tap,” his listeners number in the millions.

After leaving The Guess Who in May 1970, Randy bounced back bigger than ever with Bachman‐Turner Overdrive, one of the mid-1970s most successful hard rock bands.

The group is best known for 1970s hit singles “Let It Ride,” “Roll On Down The Highway,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” “Hey You,” and “Looking Out For #1.”

“You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” written and sung by Bachman, topped the charts in more than 20 countries on four continents. The album “Not Fragile” sold more than 3.5 million copies and topped the Billboard album charts. “Takin’ Care of Business” remains one of the most requested songs for commercial use in Sony Music’s catalogue.

“The announcement of the headliner for the summer concert is one of the special things I get to do each spring and we anticipate another exciting performance to share with our community members and fans,” said Laura Leonard, president of Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

The opening act will be well-known Indianapolis-based rock band, The Why Store, led by Chris Shaffer, with a repertoire of 130-plus original songs and 30 cover songs. In the past, Shaffer played locally at the 2008 Rock the Park concert at Mill Race Park before 1,200 fans and also at the 2012 Biggest Block Party Ever.

The annual free summer concert is the largest fundraiser for Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, the first and only not-for-profit hospice care provider in this area. It also was among the first hospices in Indiana. Proceeds from sponsors and raffle tickets help provide end-of-life care for patients and families in 16 counties in south central Indiana.

Blue Oyster Cult headlined last year’s hospice concert before an estimated 7,000 people.

Faurecia is the title sponsor for the event and Columbus Regional Health is the partner sponsor, organizers said.
