Columbus racer picks up fourth win of season

Devin Gilpin of Columbus picked up his fourth overall feature win of the 2018 racing season on May 19 at  Brownstown Speedway.

Gilpin won his second open wheel modified feature of the season and added two more late model feature victories, so he is off to a good start to the season despite the rainy weather. Gilpin won in the Don Fleetwood-owned entry over Tim Rivers of Salem, Jeremy Owens of North Vernon, Matt Boknecht of Seymour and Jacoby Hines of Nineveh.

Gilpin’s car is sponsored by Vallery Motorsports, Dasco Racing Supply, TomCat, Brown’s Oil Service, Scott Sales and Service, Blondie’s Pizzeria and Pub, Indiana Interstate Group, IndSolTech, Bane Logging and Valley and T.J. Hancock Core Supplies. Gilpin now has 64 career modified wins at the track.

Edinburgh’s Chad Stapleton picked up his first win of the season in the Indiana Late Model Series, taking the win over Tyler Cain of Seymour, Marty O’Neal of Spencer, Geraid Gault of Morgantown and Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington.

Veteran driver Mike Fields of Scottsburg became the fourth different feature winner in four races this year at Brownstown in the super stock division. Fields’ 24th career win at Brownstown earned him $1,000 for the win. Jason Hehman of Brownstown, who won the Scott Patman Tribute Race the weekend before, was second, with female racer Aubrey Eagan taking third. Josh Divine of Loogootee was fourth, and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia completed the top five.

Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee raced to his first-ever win at Brownstown after four years of trying to get to Victory Lane. Houston Roark of Dupont came home in second, with Derek Clegg of Nabb, Josh Hayes of Seymour and William Burton of North Vernon rounding out the top-five drivers.

Josh Gamblin of Kokomo won the hornet division feature, taking the win over Bill Grant of Clarksville, Owen Cosman of Martinsville, Daniel Hobbs of Springville and Andrew Roark of Dupont.

Twin Cities action

Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon hosted five classes of cars on May 19. Despite an afternoon rain shower, the races went off without a hitch. Jeremy Hines of Seymour won his second crate late model feature of the year at Twin Cities over Dylan Norman of Bedford, Mark Barber of North Vernon, David Bryant of Dupont and Brad Kemp of Clarksville.

Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing took the top honors in the super stock division for his first win of the season. Steve Johnson Jr. finished in second followed by Justin Walters of North Vernon, Jaden Mayhan of Elizabethtown and Craig Markel of Columbus.

Bryson Clark of North Vernon put an end to his father Troy’s three-race win streak when he came home the winner in the pure stock class. Mark Bruce of Commiskey crossed the line in second, with Mickey Hines of Scipio placing third. Seth Hull of Versailles and Troy Clark of North Vernon trailed.

Trent Green of Milton, Kentucky, won the open wheel modified feature over a strong field of competitors. Adam Stricker from Batavia, Ohio, was runner-up to Green, with J.T. Ayers of New Haven, Kentucky; Tim Asbell of Paoli and Cory Skipton of Greendale following.

Seymour’s Donnie Modesty recorded his first hornet division win of the season, outdistancing the previous week’s winner, Andy Anderson of North Vernon, along with Gage Clark of Cross Plains, Tony Napier II of North Vernon and Brandon Stephens of Dry Ridge, Kentucky.

Bloomington rained out

This week in racing history

From 60 years ago in 1958, Bobby Baker won the feature race at Columbus’ 25th Street Fairgrounds. The hometown driver won over Jim Denney, Bearcat Chaplin, Ray Waltz and Gene Barr.

From 50 years ago in 1968 at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, it was Gene Petro winning the late model feature over Kenny Simpson.

From 40 years ago in 1978, Twin Cities had two Memorial Day weekend races, with Dee Kramer winning the hobby stock feature. He was followed by Chuck Gilpin, Bud Seymour, Roger Sullivan and Bruce Steinert. Two nights later, it was John Mull taking the feature win over Paul Crockett and Phil Fultz.

Also from this weekend in 1978 at Brownstown, it was Paul Crockett taking the late model feature win over Terrence Johnson, Ira Bastin, Jim Graves and Dennis Boknecht. Stan Wiggam won the hobby stock feature over Roger Hehman, Mack Pace, Gene Minor and Steve Rollins.

From 30 years ago in 1988, Russ Petro won the late model feature at Twin Cities besting Daryl Herbert, Jeff Herbert, Lee Fleetwood and Terry Eaglin. Mark Clark won the street stock main over Jeff Daugherty, Taulby Donnell, Merrill Wilson and Donnie Wilson.

This weekend in 1988 at Brownstown, it was Bob Pierce winning the late model feature race over John Gill, Jim Curry, Ray Godsey and C.J. Rayburn. Earl Plessinger won the street stock feature, taking the victory over Larry Harris, Mark Barber, Billy Filburn and Mike Fields. Randy Petro took top honors in the bomber feature, taking the win over Jay Deckard, Ron Hoover, Rick Graham and Ray Hughes.

From 1998 at Brownstown Speedway, Stewart won his first career late model feature when he won the Kenny Simpson Memorial Race. Stewart, driving a C.J. Rayburn Race Car, bested a solid field of drivers in taking the win over Billy Drake, Don O’Neal, Steve Barnett and John Lawhorn.

Bret Ezzo won the street stock feature race over Gregg O’Neill, Willie Sallee, Jay Deckard and Joe Johnson. Scott Patman won the open wheel modified feature race over Don Barnett, Brad Cummings, John Davis and Nelson Gingery. Jim Ruddick won the bomber feature event over Charlie Stevens Jr., Levi Ray Godsey, Jeff Helton and Ray Godsey Jr.
