Local man in drive thru arrested on OWI charge

Columbus police arrested a local man who was accused of being intoxicated in a restaurant drive thru.

Columbus police officers were sent to a restaurant in the 1600 block of North National Road at 2:45 a.m. Friday, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers spoke with the driver, Richard K. Battin, 32, of 3450 Valley Drive in Columbus, and detected a strong odor of a alcoholic beverage, Harris said. The officers also noted Battin’s speech was slurred.

Battin failed several field sobriety tests in the parking lot and later provided a breath sample of .179 percent, Harris said.

Battin was arrested on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .15 percent or greater, jail officials said. He was being held in the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
