Paris Crossing man accidentally shot by friend

NORTH VERNON — No charges are anticipated in a Jennings County accidental shooting involving two men that police described as friends.

Officers were called to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital after Michael J. Davenport, 19, of Paris Crossing — located in southern Jennings County — arrived shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday with a facial wound, said Sgt. Andrew Richmond, spokesperson for the North Vernon Police Department.

Emergency staff at the North Vernon hospital discovered a .40 caliber bullet had struck Davenport in the left cheek and exited his right cheek, Richmond said.

The Paris Crossing man was first stabilized by emergency room staff before being flown by medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, he said.

Davenport was listed as being in fair condition on Friday at the Indianapolis hospital.

Investigators subsequently learned the shooting took place inside a home inthe 400 block of North Elm Street, about three blocks south of the North Vernon City Park.

Davenport and his friend, Joshua L. Wray, 26, were watching television together at the time of the shooting, according to Detective Ivory Sandefur of the North Vernon Police Department.

Wray was also manipulating a Smith & Wesson handgun he had just purchased when the firearm accidentally fired and struck Davenport in the face, Richmond said.

While the case remains under investigation, Sandefur said no charges are being considered against Wray at this time.
