Rally to protest separating children from parents at border planned for Wednesday

The immigration committee for Bartholomew County Indivisible is planning a rally to protest the U.S. government’s practice of separating migrant children from parents who have attempted to enter the U.S. illegally from Mexico.

The rally will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the steps of Columbus City Hall, 123 Washington St., said Kari Tyree, Columbus, a committee member helping organize the rally.

“This is not a partisan issue,” Tyree said of the 2,000 children who were separated from their parents at the border during a six-week period in April and May. “It’s a humanitarian issue.”

Committee members are urging community residents to attend Wednesday’s rally to express their opinions on the practice.

“This is not who we are,” Tyree said of the U.S. zero-tolerance policy that is separating families at the border. “The Trump administration has created this problem.”
