Golfers reach Round of 32 at Boys State Junior

Columbus North’s Drew Smith and Columbus East’s Mark Mayhew won their first-round matches Wednesday in the match play phase of the Boys State Junior Championship before falling in the Round of 32.

Smith, who earned the No. 22 seed after 36 holes of stroke play, beat No. 43 Josh Yoder of Granger 2-and-1 before falling to No. 11 Peyton Snoeberger of Williamsport 3-and-2 at Purdue’s Kampen Course.

Mayhew snuck into the match play bracket as the No. 63 seed out of 64. He upset No. 2 Alex Heck of Greenwood 1-up before falling to Drew Pickering of Westfield 6-and-5.

East’s Kody Reynolds was the No. 26 seed and fell to No. 39 Reid VonDielingen of Zionsville 2-up in the first round. North’s Henry Kiel also played in the stroke play rounds, but did not make the cut to the match play bracket.
