Columbus racers take wins at Brownstown

Columbus racers Colton Sullivan and Devin Gilpin each won a feature event on July 7 at Brownstown Speedway. A total of 114 race cars were on hand for the evening’s racing activities, which were held before one of the largest crowds of the season.

Sullivan won his third super stock feature in the last four races, taking the lead over Aubrey Eagan of Bedford on Lap 9, and then walked away with the victory. Eagan finished in second, followed by Jason Hehman of Brownstown, Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia.

Sullivan, 22, is a 2014 graduate of Hauser High School. He is the son of Angie Amick of Spraytown and the grandson of Dave and Sherry Barnett of Columbus.

Gilpin won his fourth open wheel modified feature of the year at Brownstown, driving his new Elite Chassis to victory. Gilpin debuted the car on June 30 at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park and was victorious in the feature event. At Brownstown, Gilpin led wire-to-wire for the win over Earl Plessinger of Scottsburg, Tim Rivers of Salem, Jeremy Owens of North Vernon and Roy Bruce Jr. of Bloomington.

Kent Robinson of Bloomington won the MARS Late Model feature race, taking his first career win in that series. Robinson won over Devin Gilpin, Tanner English of Benton, Kentucky, Steve Casebolt of Richmond and Shelby Miles of Bloomington.

Marty O’Neal of Spencer returned to Brownstown’s Victory Lane, piloting the Larry Hartwell-owned Indiana Pro Late Model to the win for the second time this year at the Jackson County Fairgrounds track.

Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington was second, with Tyler Neal of Paragon, Tyler Cain of Seymour and Steve Peeden of Paragon completing the top five.

Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee took the win in the pure stock feature over Troy Clark of North Vernon, Mickey Hines of Scipio, Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh and Derek Clegg of Nabb.

Scottsburg results

Marty O’Neal won the Indiana Late Model Series event on Sunday at the Scott County Fairgrounds in Scottsburg. The win completed a great weekend for the Moonlite Racing Team based in North Vernon.

O’Neal won the Indiana Pro Late Model feature at Brownstown the night before. It was the seventh overall win this season for the veteran driver. O’Neal took the victory over Tyler Neal of Paragon, Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington, Tyler Cain of Seymour and Tyler Collins of North Vernon.

In other racing action from Scottsburg, it was Donnie Modesty of Seymour winning the hornet feature. Branden Carr won the super stock feature, and his brother Dusten Carr won the pure stock main.

Nicely wins at Lawrenceburg

Tyler Nicely of Owensboro, Kentucky, won the Seventh Annual Merrill Downey Memorial on July 7 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Nicely led all 44 laps to become the first driver to win the race twice. A total of 66 modifieds attempted to qualify for the event, which started 24 cars.

K.C. Burdette of Parkersburg, West Virginia, was second, followed by Kyle Schornick of Milan, Ryan Thomas of Brownstown and Josh Harris of Utica, Kentucky.

Robby Hensley of Walton, Kentucky, won the late model feature over Dustin Nobbe of Batesville; Walker Arthur of Forest, Virginia; Jim Couch of Hamilton, Ohio; and Kody Evans of Camden, Ohio.

Bloomington results

Jason Hehman of Brownstown won the super stock feature on July 6 at Bloomington Speedway.

Hehman took the checkers first ahead of Jack Frye of Bloomington, Steve Hollars of Bloomington, Steve Hawkins of Bloomington and Quintin Strope of Commiskey.

Ryan Thomas also of Brownstown won the open wheel modified feature for the second week in a row. Thomas took the victory over Kenny Carmichael of Terre Haute, Stan Beadles of Owensville, Jeff Deckard of Bloomington and Dave Baldwin of Perrysville.

Anton Hernandez took the RaceSaver sprint car main event over Ethan Barrow, John Paynter Jr., Ryan Tusing and Chris Babcock.

USAC at Putnamville

The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series was in action on July 6 at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville. Tyler Courtney would come home with the win over A.J. Hopkins, Jason McDougal, Chris Windom and Jordan Kinser.

Eldora hosts Kings Royal tonight

Tonight at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, will be the 35th Annual Kings Royal for sprint cars, paying $50,000 to win. Twin Cities back in action tonight

Phillips makes return tonight

Dick Phillips of Columbus will get back behind the wheel of a crate late model owned by George Covey of Seymour tonight at Brownstown Speedway. Phillips, who turned 61 on Monday, started his racing career in go-karts at the Bartholomew County Fairgrounds before purchasing a dirt late model in 1979, where he was Rookie of the Year at Brownstown. Over the past several years, he has raced a late model, super stock and modified.

This week in racing history

From 50 years ago in 1968 at Bloomington, it was Calvin Gilstrap taking the feature victory over Bob Kinser, Rex Mitchell, Johnny Noble and Butch Wilkerson.

Also, from 1968 at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, hometown driver Russ Petro swept the race program, winning the late model feature in a 1961 Ford. To top off the night, Petro also won the demolition derby held at the track after the races.

From this weekend in 1968 at Brownstown Speedway, the winner of the late model feature was Jim Haley over Paul Crockett, Teako Ray, Ira Bastin and Petro.

From 1988 at Bloomington Speedway, Jeff Gordon won his second straight sprint car feature over Kelly Kinser, Todd Shields, Andy Stapp and Chuck Amati.

Also from 30 years ago in 1988 at Twin Cities, it was Daryl Herbert winning the late model feature race. Lee Fleetwood, was second with Willie Sallee, Jim Ruddick and Terrence Johnson trailing. Phil Fultz won the street stock main event, besting Jeff Daugherty, Mark Clark, Donnie Wilson and Taulby Donnell.
