A Columbus man has been arrested and jailed in a shooting Sunday that occurred in an east side apartment.

John I. Cornett, 34, of Columbus, has been arrested and is jailed on a preliminary felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Cornett is accused of shooting Joshua L. Music, 32, of Edinburgh, who was hospitalized from injuries sustained in the shooting, Harris said.

According to jail records, Cornett was arrested at 5 p.m. Sunday and booked into the jail at 8:27 p.m.

Music was listed in critical condition Monday at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, hospital officials said.

Music was shot multiple times Sunday afternoon inside a Quail Run Apartments building at 1085 Robert Drive in an incident reported at 2:22 p.m. Sunday, Harris said.

Police logs listing 911 calls show the shooting occurred in Apartment 2D at that Roberts Drive address. Harris confirmed Cornett lived at that address.

An unidentified individual took Music to Columbus Regional Hospital, about six blocks north of where the shooting occurred, before an ambulance could arrive, Harris said. From Columbus Regional, Music was transported by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital, Harris said.

Cornett is held in the Bartholomew County Jail without bond on a 48-hour hold, giving Columbus police additional time to complete their investigation and the county prosecutor’s office time to make a decision on filing of formal criminal charges against Cornett.

Quail Run Apartments, which consists of 16 buildings with 56 apartments, is located north of 10th Street between North Gladstone Avenue and McClure Road.
