Suspect in apartment shooting released from jail; victim’s condition improves

A local man arrested and accused of shooting an Edinburgh man has been released from the Bartholomew County Jail as an investigation into the incident continues.

John I. Cornett, 34, of 1085 Robert Drive, Apartment 2D, was released from jail Friday after a 72-hour hold requested by the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office expired.

Cornett was not required to post 10 percent of a $500,000 bond to be released from jail because he has not been formally charged by the prosecutor’s office with a criminal offense.

Cornett was initially arrested by Columbus police on a preliminary felony charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

Prosecutor Bill Nash said an investigation is continuing, including additional interviews by detectives.

Cornett was accused of shooting Joshua L. Music, 32, Edinburgh, multiple times at Cornett’s Quail Run apartment. The shooting was reported at 2:22 p.m. July 15 to Columbus police.

An unidentified individual took Music to Columbus Regional Hospital before an ambulance could arrive, police said. Music was taken by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Music was listed in stable condition Tuesday at Methodist, hospital officials said. He had been listed in critical condition last week after the shooting.

Quail Run Apartments, which consists of 16 buildings with 56 apartments, is located north of 10th Street between North Gladstone Avenue and McClure Road.
