Semi destroyed by tire fire

A fire that destroyed a semi in the southbound lanes of I-65 north of Edinburgh on Thursday started in one of the vehicle’s tires.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies said Robin D. Kutruff, driving for Horizon out of Edinburgh, was carrying a full load of stamped metal car parts when the fire started shortly after 11 a.m. as he was heading southbound on I-65.

Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Sgt. T.A. Smith was sent to the fire, along with firefighters from German Township and Flat Rock. Kutruff was not injured, deputies said.

Both lanes of I-65 were closed for almost an hour, and one-lane remained closed at the scene for several hours after the fire, deputies said.
