Columbus racers take podium finish at Brownstown

The 2018 edition of the Jackson County Fair concluded on July 28 at Brownstown Speedway with a full grandstand of spectators and a season-high 164 race cars in the pit area.

Devin Gilpin of Columbus withstood all of the challenges of Nicholasville, Kentucky, driver David Webb to win the Sixth Annual Paul Crockett Memorial for super late models. It was Gilpin’s fourth late model win of the season at the track.

Zak Blackwood of Columbus joined Gilpin and Webb on the podium. He came home with a career best third-place finish in a super late model. Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh was fourth, and Jared Bailey of Bedford completed the top five.

Marty O’Neal of Spencer won his fourth Indiana Late Model Series feature at Brownstown over Steve Peeden of Paragon, Tyler Cain of Seymour, Justin Shaw of Greenwood and Chad Combs of Bloomington.

Mike Fields of Scottsburg survived a duel with Brownstown’s Jason Hehman to win his fifth super stock main of the season. Hehman was second behind Fields, a former Jackson County resident. Colton Sullivan of Columbus finished third, with Aubrey Eagan of Bedford and Tucker Chastain of Bedford rounding out the top five.

Tyler Nicely of Owensboro, Kentucky, led all the way to win the open wheel modified feature. Devin Gilpin finished second, with Matt Boknecht of Seymour coming home in third. Jeremy Hines of Seymour and Ryan Thomas of Brownstown completed the top five.

Rick Gumm of Crothersville took his second straight pure stock feature at Brownstown. Gumm dominated the race, leading the entire distance for the victory. Derek Clegg of Nabb was second, with Troy Clark of North Vernon finishing up in third. Mickey Hines of Scipio and Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee trailed the winner to the finish line.

Donnie Modesty of Seymour, the defending track champion in the hornet division, won the feature race over Gregg O’Neill, Bill Grant, John Mayer Jr. and Trent Adams.

Tonight, Brownstown will host the “Hall of Fame” Classic with a $10,000-to-win payoff on the line for the super late models. Also competing will be modifieds and super stocks, with an increased payoff of $1,000 to win for each of those classes. Also, a $500-to-win feature for the pure stocks is scheduled.

USAC Sprintweek wraps up

The AMSOIL USAC Indiana Sprintweek wrapped up with events at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Bloomington Speedway and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

On July 26 at Lincoln Park, veteran Dave Darland picked up the win. Chris Windom finished in second, with A.J. Hopkins, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Justin Grant trailing.

On July 27, Bloomington hosted a full-house of sprinters and fans, and Darland came home with the feature victory. Thomas finished in second, with Windom, Thomas Meseraull and Tyler Courtney completing the top-five finishers.

On July 28, to conclude the 2018 edition of Indiana Sprintweek, it was Darland taking the triumph over Windom, Chase Stockon, Thomas and C.J. Leary.

Windom was crowned the champion this year after garnering the most points. Thomas, Darland, Leary and Courtney were the rest of the top five in the final points for the week.

UMRA competes at Twin Cities

Robbie Roland of Carthage won the UMRA King of the TQ Midgets event on July 28 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Aaron Percell of Rushville was second, with Greensburg’s Ron Combs taking third. Cory Clay of Morgantown and Matt Lux of Manilla completed the top five drivers.

The three-quarter midget competitors competed Friday night at Gas City Speedway and will race tonight in a rainout makeup event at Montpelier Motor Speedway.

In other racing results from Twin Cities, Scott Hampton of Greenfield won the sprint car feature, and Ethan Barrow of Unionville won the 305 RaceSaver sprint main event.

Lawrenceburg racing tonight

After last week’s “Night of Destruction” Lawrenceburg Speedway gets back to its regular circle track racing tonight when the Jason Soudrette Memorial will be held. Florence hosts big week of racing

While it’s idle tonight in preparations for next week’s racing action, Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, will host four nights of racing starting on Wednesday with the Ralph Latham Memorial. The North/South Shootout will take place on Thursday, the now traditional double-heat passing points heat races will take place on Friday and the Sunoco Race Fuels North/South 100 will take place on Aug. 11, paying $50,000 to win.

This week in racing history

From 60 years ago in 1958 at the 25th Street Fairgrounds Speedway in Columbus, hometown driver Gen Barr, driving a 1937 Chrysler, won the feature race. Johnny Baker was second, with Bearcat Chaplin and

Bobby Baker completing the top-four finishers. From 50 years ago in 1968 at 25th Street Speedway, Joe King won the late model feature over Kenny Simpson and John Warner.

From 40 years ago in 1978 at Twin Cities, it was Ron Hoover with the feature win in the hobby stock class over Chuck Gilpin, Phil Fultz, Russ Smiley and R.A. Cook.

Also from this weekend in 1978 at Brownstown, it was Ira Bastin winning the late model feature over Bob Fleetwood, John Davis, Ray Godsey and Junior Pace. Russ Petro was victorious in the hobby stock main over Doc Jewell, Bobby Carrier Sr., Bob Johnson and Hood Cole.

On this weekend 30 years ago in 1988, Jim Curry won the late model feature at Twin Cities over Bobby Carnes, Robert Brison, Brian Asbury and Garry Mahoney. Buford Burton won the street stock feature winning over Don Hoover, Tim Clark, Frank Douglas and Brian Wilhite.

From 1988 at Brownstown, it was Bob Pierce taking the late model feature over Jim Curry, Doug Ault, John Gill and Don Hobbs. Mark Barber took the street stock feature over Mike Fields, Steve Kimberlin, Ted Pfeiffer Jr. and Gary Green. The bomber feature went to Roger Bense over Frankie Coomer, Ray Hughes, Randy Petro and Kevin Sebastian.

From 1998 at Brownstown, Brad Cummings won the modified feature race. Randy Petro was second, with Scott Patman, Earl Plessinger and Brad Erwin trailing. Joe Johnson took the top honors in the street stock main over Mike Fields, Gregg O’Neill, Bret Ezzo and Willie Sallee.
