Bartholomew County manufacturer seeks tax abatement

After doubling the size of its facility last year, a northern Bartholomew County manufacturer plans to hire at least 14 more full-time employees in the coming months.

The additional hiring at Georg Utz Inc., located on a 35-acres site north of the Edinburgh Premium Outlets, will involve line operators and process technicians earning salaries averaging about $18 an hour, said Jason Hester, president of the Greater Columbus Economic Development Corp.

The factory that is located off County Road 250W, which produces custom and standard plastic containers for industrial, logistic and storage industries, currently has 63 employees that include 15 temporary workers, said Mike Black, the company’s director of operations.

“Of the 15 temps, I could hire 11 of them full time and feel perfectly comfortable tomorrow,” Black told the Bartholomew County Council during its Monday work session. “But it’s really a matter of finding the right fit for our work culture.”

Black appeared during the council’s work session to prepare them for his company’s fifth tax abatement request that will be formally presented and considered Tuesday.
