Duke Energy presents $10,000 to BCSC for STEM needs

The Duke Energy Foundation has presented a $10,000 check to support the STEM curriculum within Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. grade schools.

For the youngest students, a variety of hands-on STEM-related activities are held regularly. The most recent schools to add a STEM lab are Schmitt and Taylorsville elementary schools.

More than $30 million in competitive grants are made each year by the Duke Energy Foundation that are focused in three different areas, kindergarten to career programs, the environment and community impact, according to the Duke Energy website.

Last month, the school corporation requested $228,778 from tax increment financing funds for STEM programming. Most of the money being sought is to purchase science lab equipment at middle and high schools.

But $25,000 is earmarked for continued professional development for teachers to integrate new digital resources and equipment into BCSC’s science curriculum, while an additional $50,000 is intended for a STEM camp next summer for elementary school students.
