Man struck, killed by wife’s truck suffered head injuries

A local man who died after being struck by a pickup truck driven by his wife suffered multiple skull fractures.

Justin L. Smith, 34, of 225 Hinman St., had extensive skull trauma after being hit by the vehicle on State Street near Beatty Street at 2:50 a.m. Monday, about four block from his home, according to results from an autopsy released by Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting.

Smith was pronounced dead at Columbus Regional Hospital at 3:33 a.m., Nolting said. Toxicology tests are pending in regard to his death, Nolting said.

Officers have determined that Smith’s spouse, Angela D. Smith,, 34, also of 225 Hinman St., was driving the vehicle that struck Justin Smith, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

She was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw and has been interviewed by detectives, Harris said.

Columbus police are continuing to seek witnesses in the incident.

Officers have received surveillance video from a nearby residence that shows the incident, according to a witness who contacted The Republic.

Justin Smith was released Saturday from the Bartholomew County Jail, where he spent 48 hours after Indiana Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officers arrested him on multiple charges regarding stolen motorcycles found at private property on Jonesville Road.

Smith had faced preliminary charges of criminal trespassing, theft/receiving stolen property, possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana.
