Portion of U.S. 50 bypass renamed for fallen officers

NORTH VERNON — A segment of the U.S. 50 bypass in north Vernon will be named the “Officer Anthony Burton and Reserve Officer Lonnie Howard Memorial Highway.”

The presentation of designating the roadway will be at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5 when memorial signage will be unveiled as state officials read a House Resolution in ceremonies in the south parking lot of Lord of Life Lutheran Church.

The church is located at 3300 N. State Road 3 along the U.S. 50 Bypass near where the two North Vernon law enforcement officers were killed in 1993, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation. The two died after a suspect crashed his vehicle into the policeman’s patrol car.
