Motorcyclist dies in Shelby County accident

SHELBYVILLE — The Shelby County Sheriff Department is investigating a fatal accident which happened on Labor Day in the 3900 block of East Michigan Road.

Deputies were sent to the area at 11:47 a.m. Monday and found the driver of a 2019 Harley Davidson motorcycle, identified as Robert Gabbard, 64, Shelbyville, dead at the scene.

Deputies said a 2010 Ford F150 truck driven by Gregory Cherry, 60, Shelbyville, which was pulling a 2004 camper-trailer, was traveling west on Michigan Road and had slowed to turn into a driveway on the south side of the road.

The truck and trailer started to make the turn when it was struck in the side by the motorcycle, deputies said. Gabbard had been traveling west behind the truck and was unable to stop when the truck started to make its turn, deputies said.

The sheriff’s department is not releasing any further information at this time.
