Columbus Speedway go-kart action features several winners

Columbus Speedway Go-Kart Racing was back in action on Sept. 1 with a full racing program.

A total of 59 entries were on hand for the events, which are contested at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The winners in their respective divisions were Devin Smith of Columbus (340 class), Travis Wilburn of Milan (410 class), Kiden Rose of Indianapolis (JR 2 class), Robert Doyle of Jeffersonville (RWB class), Ryder Richardson of Indianapolis (rookie class), Corey Vanover of Memphis (380 class), R.T. Lowe of Columbus (flathead class) and James Frazee of Columbus (vintage class).

Columbus Speedway Go-Kart Racing will not be racing for the remainder of September. The next scheduled event is slated for Oct. 5 and 6.

Gilpin wins at Brownstown again

Devin Gilpin of Columbus won his fifth open wheel modified feature of the season on Sept. 1 at Brownstown Speedway. Ryan Thomas of Brownstown chased Gilpin across the finish line, with Jeremy Owens of North Vernon, Jeff Stith of Louisville and Earl Plessinger of Lexington, Kentucky, trailing.

Gilpin came back to finish second in the Hoosier Dirt Classic for the super late models in the Jim Beeman-owned car. Greg Johnson of Bedford was victorious in the $2,000-to-win event when he recorded his second career win in the annual event, which began in 1984. Johnson’s other win came back in 2006.

Trailing Johnson and Gilpin across the stripe were Marty O’Neal of Spencer, Steven Godsey of Bedford and David Webb of Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Branden Carr of Underwood won his first super stock feature at Brownstown, taking the win over Tim Eddelman of Taylorsville, Colton Sullivan of Columbus, Jason Hehman of Brownstown and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia.

Rick Gumm of Crothersville continues to dominate the pure stock division, winning his fifth feature in a row. Josh Hayes of Seymour was second, with Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee was third. Troy Clark of North Vernon was fourth, with David Palmer taking fifth.

Greg Garrison of Bloomington took his second hornet main of the year, winning over Bill Grant of Clarksville, Josh Hallett of Brownstown, Daniel Hobbs of Bloomington and Tony Lucas of Seymour.

Hines wins Collins Memorial

Jeremy Hines of Seymour won the Ted Collins Memorial for crate late models on Sunday at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Shelby Miles of Bloomington placed second with Marty O’Neal coming home third. Completing the top five were Josh Dietz of Elsmere, Kentucky, and Tyler Collins of North Vernon.

Branden Carr of Underwood won the super stock feature. Troy Clark of North Vernon took the pure stock feature. Tim Prince of Heltonville captured the open wheel modified feature, and Gregg O’Neill of Mooresville won the hornet main event.

During the intermission, the late Ted Collins’ widow Sue and their sons Trent and Tory were inducted into the Twin Cities Hall of Fame.

Tonight, Twin Cities will host a regular program of crate late models, 410 non-wing sprints, pure stocks,

Abrams wins Lawrenceburg

Garrett Abrams of Rushville won his second sprint car feature of the season on Sept. 1 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Dickie Gaines finished in second, followed by Michael Fischesser, Thomas Meseraull and J.J. Hughes, a Columbus native.

Kyle Schornick of Milan took his third open wheel modified feature of the season, winning over J.T. Ayers, David Spille, Scotty Kincaid and Travis Pruitt.

Moyer wins Baltes Classic at Eldora

Billy Moyer held off Nick Hoffman to win the Baltes Classic on Sunday at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Moyer, a six-time World 100 winner, will be one of the favorites heading into tonight’s 48th Annual World 100 at Eldora, which pays $51,000 to win.

In the Baltes Classic, trailing Moyer and Hoffman across the finish line were Matt Miller, Rusty Schlenk and Chad Finley. Devin Gilpin, who won an earlier event at Eldora back in the spring, finished eighth.

USAC sprint car results

The AMSOIL USAC Sprint Car Series was back in action over the Labor Day Weekend with events at Tri- City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois, and I-55 Federated Auto Parts Speedway in Pevely, Missouri.

At Tri-City on Aug. 31, Tyler Courtney was the winner of the feature event over Kevin Thomas Jr., Brady Bacon, Robert Ballou and Dave Darland.

At I-55 on Sept. 1, the winner was Jason McDougal over Kevin Thomas Jr., Robert Ballou, Tyler Courtney and Justin Grant.

Kinser Memorial rained out

The Bob Kinser Memorial was rained out on Aug. 31 at Bloomington Speedway. The event will not be made up this year. The 2018 racing season is now complete at Bloomington.

This week in racing history

From 60 years ago in 1958, hometown driver Joe King won the feature race at the Columbus Speedway.

From 50 years ago in 1968, 25th Street Speedway in Columbus held its final event of the season, and Jack Owens won the feature race over Gene Petro, Gene Dalton and Pete Willoughby.

Also, from 1968 at Twin Cities, it was Pee Wee Day winning the feature event over Merrill Wilson, Hillbilly Ogle and Orville Ruble.

From 40 years ago in 1978, Willie Sallee won the hobby stock feature race at Twin Cities over Russ Smiley, Roger Sullivan, Bruce Steinert and Ron Hoover.

Brownstown Speedway closed out its 1978 racing season with Bob Fleetwood winning the late model feature race over Ira Bastin and Dennis Boknecht. Doc Jewell won the hobby stock feature over Marvin O’Neal and Charlie Belden.

Also, from 1978, Lawrenceburg Speedway closed out its  season with the Southeastern Indiana Sprint Car Championship. Danny Smith would come home the winner of the finale over Bernie Graybeal, Gary Grissom, Randy Kinser and Marvin Deputy.

From 30 years ago in 1988 at Twin Cities, Phil Fultz won the street stock feature over Mark Clark, Denny Campbell, Taulby Donnell and Keith Deppe.

From 1988 at Brownstown, Steve Trabue won the Indiana Enduro Series event over Jim Ruddick, Todd Richey, David Dotson and Larry Gingery. Terrence Johnson won the mini-stock feature race over Timmy Schmaltz, Henry Happel, Willy McRoberts and Jim Holman. Charlie Stevens Jr. won the bomber main over Tim Prince, Ray Godsey Jr., Frankie Warren and Sam Chastain.
