Four arrested after traffic stop

Four local residents were arrested on drug and warrant charges after a traffic stop Saturday night.

Columbus Police Officer Drake Maddix stopped a vehicle just before midnight for a minor traffic violation near 12th and Washington streets, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Maddix spoke with the driver, Michael T. Wear, 36, of 2706 Williamsburg Court, and with the passengers, Kristan J. Guijarro, 41, of 1021 Pearl St., Shawn E. Mace, 46, of 1021 Pearl St. and Rebecca S. Smith, 26, of 12000 W. County Road 525S, Harris said.

A police canine was requested and alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, Harris said.

Officers searched the vehicle and found marijuana inside, he said. Officers also determined that Mace and Guijarro had warrants seeking their arrest.

Wear was arrested on preliminary charges of driving while suspended with a prior conviction and possession of marijuana. Smith was arrested on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana. Guijarro was arrested on an Elkhart County warrant and Mace was arrested on a Union County warrant.
