Columbus racer wins sprint feature at Lawrenceburg

Joss Moffatt of Columbus drove his new DRC Chassis to the feature win at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Sept. 15.

For the 38-year-old racer, it was his first sprint car win of the season. Moffatt is a three-time track champion at Lawrenceburg.

Moffatt’s car is sponsored by Orville Wright Racing, Williams Precision Engines Hoosier Tire, KT’s Racing Services, Momentum Racing Suspensions, Nate Brannin Lawn Care, 350 Designs and E3 Spark Plugs.

Trailing Moffatt across the finish line were Jarett Andretti, Dickie Gaines, Matt Westfall and 2018 track champion Garrett Abrams of Rushville.

The next event at Lawrenceburg will be the Fall Nationals on Sept. 29 featuring the AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car Series plus open wheel modifieds. For more info, visit lawrenceburgspeedway.com.

Brownstown to host Jackson 100

Tonight, the Brownstown Speedway will host the $20,000-to-win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Jackson 100. The nationally known series for dirt late models will run heat races, B-Mains and the 100-lap main attraction. Also on the docket for this evening is a complete show for the open wheel modifieds and super stocks.

Scott Bloomquist is the defending Jackson 100 winner. In fact, Bloomquist has won three out of the past four Jackson 100s at Brownstown and has a record seven victories in the track’s most prestigious event.

Bloomquist is currently third in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship Points Standings, trailing points leader Jonathan Davenport and defending series champion Josh Richards. The Dirt million winner in Mansfield, Ohio, Earl Pearson Jr., is fourth in points, followed by last week’s $40,000 winner at Knoxville, Iowa, Jimmy Owens.

Don O’Neal of Martinsville, last week’s runner-up at Knoxville, is sixth in points, followed by Bobby Pierce, Tim McCreadie, Gregg Satterlee and Darrell Lanigan. Mason Zeigler leads the LOLMDS Rookie-of-the- Year chase over Florida’s Kyle Bronson.

Shelby Miles of Bloomington won the Indiana Pro late model feature on Sept. 15 at Brownstown Speedway. It was Miles’ first crate late model win of the year. Marty O’Neal of Spencer finished in second, followed by Tyler Neal of Paragon, Austin Burns of Morgantown and Geraid Gault of Morgantown.

Jason Hehman of Brownstown took top honors in the super stock feature race for the second time this season over Mike Fields of Scottsburg, Colton Sullivan of Columbus, Tucker Chastain of Bedford and Tim Schumpe of Vallonia.

Matt Boknecht of Seymour won the open wheel modified main event for the fourth time this year, besting Jeremy Owens of North Vernon, Tim Prince of Heltonville, Jamey Wilson of Seymour and Matthew Tiller Jr. of Bloomington.

Rick Gumm from Crothersville won his sixth consecutive pure stock feature at Brownstown over Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh, Derek Clegg of Nabb, Mickey Hines of Scipio and Zachary Stalker of Heltonville.

Gregg O’Neill II of Mooresville captured the hornet division special. Josh Hallett of Brownstown was second, followed by Andrew Deavers of Mitchell, Trent Adams of Elizabethtown and Tony Lucas of Seymour.

Hines takes two at Twin Cities

Jeremy Hines of Seymour had a big night on Sept. 15 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Hines won both the crate late model and super stock feature. Other feature winners at Twin Cities were Scott Bradley (305 RaceSaver sprints), Bryson Clark of North Vernon (pure stock), Andy Anderson of North Vernon (hornets) and Melissa Clark of North Vernon (pure stock powder puff).

USAC sprint results

The AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Cars were in action last weekend at Terre Haute Action Track and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt. On Sept. 14 at Terre Haute. the winner was Brady Bacon in the Jim Hurtubise Classic. Robert Ballou finished in second, followed by Chris Windom, C.J. Leary and Kevin Thomas Jr.

Thomas came back to win the Sept. 15 Haubstadt Hustler at Tri-State. Leary finished in the runner-up spot, with Jason McDougal, Dave Darland and Carson Short completingthe top five.

Paxson wins UMRA feature

Joey Paxson of Connersville won the UMRA King of the TQ Midgets event on Sept. 14 at Thunder Valley Speedway in Salem. Ron Combs of Greensburg was second, followed by Austin Nigh of Greenfield, Matt Lux of Manilla and Nick Speidel of Muncie.

Matthew Hedrick of Rushville leads the current series points standings over Tate Martz of Rushville, Combs and Lux.

USAC car owner dies

Steve Chrisman, whose cars won a total of eight USAC National Sprint Car features between 1992 and 1998, died Sept. 7 at the age of 58.

Chrisman, of Edinburgh, was a regular on the tour, fielding the familiar No. 25 on the dirt and pavement.

The self-employed farmer was the owner of the car Tony Stewart used to score his first career USAC National Sprint Car win in 1992 at I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri. Chrisman scored again with a victory in the 1994 “Tony Hulman Classic” at Terre Haute Action Track with driver Cary Faas.

The most successful driver in terms of victories for Chrisman was his partnership with driver Kevin Doty, who drove to victory in six of Chrisman’s eight career USAC triumphs at Eldora Speedway in 1995 and twice in 1998; Twin Cities Raceway Park in 1997 and 1998; and Lawrenceburg Speedway in 1998.

Former Columbus racer dies

Randy Knapp of Columbus died on Aug. 20. He was 66. Knapp was a U.S. Army veteran who served honorably in the Vietnam War.

Knapp and his brother Kenny were longtime local racers based in Taylorsville and raced for several years at 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, Twin Cities Raceway in Vernon and Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown. One of Randy’s last feature wins was at Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Illinois.

This week in racing history

From 50 years ago in 1968 at Twin Cities, it was Hillbilly Ogle with the feature win over Merrill Wilson, Bill Franks and Orville Ruble.

From 30 years ago in 1998 at Brownstown, the late model feature was won by Marty O’Neal over Dan Sturgeon, Doug Ault, Mark Barber and Scott Smith. Ray Godsey Jr. won the bomber feature race over Tim Clark, Tim Prince, Charlie Stevens Jr. and Levi Ray Godsey. The Indiana Enduro Series event went to Willie Sallee over Mike Basham and Ray Hughes.
