Columbus North, East among top finishers in band invitationals

Both high school marching bands from Columbus were in competition Saturday at Indiana sites.

The Sound of North captured first place in Class AAAAA during the band invitational at Floyd Central High School in Floyds Knobs, competing against Bloomington South High School in its division.

The 160-member Columbus North marching band captured six honors for its performance: Best music, best visual, best effect, best percussion, best color guard and best drum major.

The Columbus East Olympian Spirit marching band earned third place in Scholastic Class A during the Greenwood High School marching band invitational. Perry Meridian in Indianapolis and Westfield high school marching bands also competed in this class.

East band director David Rodgers said the 70-member marching band’s music was strong on Saturday, with members continuing to work and develop the visual aspect of their performance.

Looking ahead, the Olympian Spirit will be competing against some of the same bands this weekend at Ben Davis High School, and will perform last in its class, he said.

“This will give us a true test of where we are at,” Rodgers said.

The Sound of North is also scheduled to compete during the Ben Davis invitational Saturday in Indianapolis.
