Manufacturing Day to show careers to students

Thirty-five Jennings County High School students will be escorted around select local industries on Wednesday during the second annual Jennings County Manufacturing Day.

Juniors and seniors in engineering, Project Lead the Way, agriculture and JAG classes, and iGrad students, were offered the opportunity to participate.

The participating industries are: Biehle Systems, Decatur Mold, Decatur Plastics, Erler Industries, G & T Industries, Lowe’s Distribution Center, Martinrea, North Vernon Industry Corp., SET Enterprises and Webster West Packaging, according to the Jennings County Economic Development Commission and the high school.

The industries will explain what their jobs entail, and explain direct skills needed to qualify for long-term positions in manufacturing.

The Jennings County EDC, which sponsors the event, has 10 school buses that will pick students up at 8:30 a.m., take them to lunch at the Community Building at noon, and return them to school by 2:30. Students on each bus will visit four industries.

“By 2025, it is predicted that 2 million jobs will be unfilled in manufacturing nationwide. In Jennings County, employees take gratification in their work, and are open to inspire the next generation about the opportunities in manufacturing,” said Trish Speer, of the EDC.

The community can participate, too. SET Enterprise will open its doors to residents who would like a tour of their plant from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
