Services and studies

First Presbyterian — Worship begins at 9:30 a.m. at the church, 512 Seventh St., Columbus. On Sunday, the church will reflect on the tragic story of David and Bathsheba, in 2 Samuel 11 and 12, a story of sexual misconduct with contemporary #metoo echoes. Marietta Macy will preach, reflecting on this passage.

Infant and toddler care is available from 9:15 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

The men’s and women’s support groups meet at 7 a.m. Fridays, and a second men’s support group of working-age men meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered 5 p.m. Friday, with entry through the glass doors on Franklin Street.

The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — At the 9 a.m. traditional service and the 11 a.m. celebration service, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “Commissioning a New Missionary,” at the church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus. The scripture will be Mark 10:35-45. Sunday school for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m.

Childcare is available during both services.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The Amplify non-traditional service is at 9 a.m. Sunday and Sunday School classes are at 10 a.m. The Well traditional service is at 11 a.m. Both Amplify and The Well are held in the main sanctuary, led by Pastor Wes Jones. The Prayer Team will meet at 8 a.m. Sunday School classes meet in their regular rooms at the church, located at 5300 E. 25th St., Columbus.

Adult choir practice is at 5 p.m. followed by the Sunday evening service at 6 p.m.

“In The Beginning…,” a small-group Bible study, meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays in The Friendship Center. It is studying the book of Genesis.

Wednesday activities begin with supper at 5:30 p.m. followed by GLOW at 6:15 p.m. The Prayer Team will meet at 6:15 p.m. in The Prayer Room. Youth meets at 6:30 p.m. and Adult Bible study will meet at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Grace Lutheran — Worship is at 8 and 10:30 a.m., with Sunday School for all ages at 9:25 a.m.

ALPHA Class continues Tuesday on the topic, “Why and how should I tell others?” and the Searching Scripture class will continue with a study of the Ten Commandments. A light supper will be served at 6 p.m. Child care will be available.

Lowell General Baptist — The church will be starting its revival services on Sunday. Service will start at 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. the rest of the week. Roger Poynter will be the visiting preacher.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Sunday’s 10 a.m. sermon, “Position, Prestige and Power,” marks the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost with text from Job 38:1-7, 34-41; Hebrews 5:1-10; and Mark 10:35-45.

Sunday school will begin at 9 a.m. followed by fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study will resume at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Petersville United Methodist — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will deliver the message, “Reach Out,” with scripture Romans 12:3-8 being shared by liturgist Allyson Loper. The theme for the 9 a.m. Sunday service will be “The Church Needs Our Unique Gifts.” The choir will be singing special music, directed by Kathy Bush and accompanied by Chris Kimerling. Teresa Covert will lead the children’s time.

A time of fellowship will follow the worship service at the church, 2781 N. County Road 500E, Columbus.

Larry and Connie Nolting will host the Baker’s Dozen Monday night Bible study and Chris Kimerling will host the Journey group, both meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday. New members are welcome at either of the classes.

The Sit and Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at the Nolting home. Choir practice will be held 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Prayer Group will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with Barb Hedrick as leader. The Administrative Council will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall.

The Coin Collection from October through December will be directed to the Bishop’s Children’s Christmas Fund. Gravy packets are still being collected for Love Chapel holiday meals, and recyclable plastic bottle caps continue to be collected for Clifty Creek Elementary School. Check the Turkey Supper list in the kitchen for things needed for the Nov. 2-3 supper.

St. Paul Lutheran — During the 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services Sunday, Pastor Jeff Patterson will present the sermon, “Rest,” based on Hebrews 4:1-16.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — The service is at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Nic Cable will present his reading, “A Spiritual Anatomy of Healing,” about how healing can be a spiritual practice in both and church and the wider world.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church, on the corner of State Road 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard. His message will be “The Battle Within” from Deuteronomy 6:1-9. The children’s program through sixth grade meets at 10 a.m.

The Ruby Tuesday Women’s Bible Study has begun a new study, “The Joy of Encouragement,” by David Jeremiah. This group meets from 10 to 11:15 a.m. each Tuesday at the church.

There is a Men’s and Women’s 7-week Bible Study that meets from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The Men’s study will be “The Armor of God” and the Women’s study will be “Gideon: Your Weakness, God’s Strength.”

Events

Flintwood Wesleyan training program — The first Discipleship Training Program class begins at 9:30 a.m. today at the church, located at 5300 E. 25th St., Columbus. The class will be upstairs in Curry Hall. This class is a New Testament elective on Philippians and will be taught by the Rev. Glenn Black.

First United Methodist education forum — The church, 618 Eighth St., Columbus, will continue its education forum at 10:10 a.m. in Fellowship Hall this Sunday and Oct. 28. Open to the public, the sessions will continue the documentary “Rise Above the Mark” about the issues and challenges facing Indiana’s public schools. Testing, finances, charter schools, vouchers and the role of Legislature are among the issues affecting local schools.

First Lutheran Fall Festival — There will be a Fall Festival from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the church, 2600 25th St. There will be food and crafts and pumpkin painting for all ages. The public is welcome. All activities are free.

Grace Lutheran pitch-in — Everyone is invited to a hayride and pitch-in at 6 p.m. today at Apple Works orchards, 8157 S. County Road 250W, Trafalgar.

Hartsville Church of Christ — The South Central Indiana Men’s Christian Fellowship will be Tuesday at Hartsville Church of Christ, 142 N. Washington St., Hartsville. A chili dinner is at 6:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7:15. The Rev. Chad Ranson of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Greenwood will be the featured speaker.

St. Paul Lutheran Spirit Night — Everyone is invited to Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A, 1250 N. National Road, Columbus, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Ten percent of the proceeds will support St. Paul Early Childhood Ministry when mentioning St. Paul ECM at the time of ordering.

Petersville United Methodist Turkey Supper — The 51st annual Turkey Supper will take place Nov. 2-3 at Petersville United Methodist Church, 2781 N. County Road 500E, Columbus. Serving will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. each evening. Adult tickets will be $12, tickets for children 5 to 12 years will cost $6, and those 4 years and younger may eatfor free. The menu will include baked turkey, dressing, gravy, noodles, green beans, cranberry relish or applesauce, rolls, dessert and drinks. Linda and Don Jackson are serving as chairpersons.

Westside Community Fall Festival — The third Westside Fall Festival will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the church, on the corner of State Road 46 West and Tipton Lakes Boulevard. It includes grilling, games and prizes for kids of all ages. Everyone is invited to attend.

White Creek United Methodist hog roast — The 17th annual hog roast is 4 to 6:30 p.m. today at the church, 6730 W. County Road 930S, Columbus. The dinner will include pulled pork, BBQ or plain, baked beans, slaw, applesauce, chips, drink and a choice of dessert. Carryout meals will be available. Cost will be whatever the customer wants to pay. There will also be handmade crafts, baked goods and church cookbooks available for purchase.
